On Saturday night in Las Vegas with 14,272 fans in attendance, Brock Lesnar showed that despite having only 3 fights going into the bout with Randy Couture that he deserved to be there as he finished the legend in the 2nd round of their heavyweight title fight.

As the fight started it seemed Couture was more than comfortable working from the clinch with Lesnar as he worked hard to press the larger man against the cage while trying to get superior position.

Lesnar didn't take long to get back at Couture as he took the champion down, and worked to improve his positioning getting as far as half guard before the champion got out from the bottom.

Back on the feet, Couture tried for a takedown of his own to which Lesnar actually grabbed the fence and was warned by the referee, but still the champion could not muster the strength to take his nearly 280lb opponent down.

In the 2nd round the fighters started to trade more with Lesnar hitting Couture with a good elbow in the early going that wobbled the Las Vegas based fighter, but he soon recovered and the two heavyweights clinched again against the cage.

During an exchange between the two big men, the Minnesota native suffered a cut over his right eye that caused some bleeding and was an obvious distraction as Lesnar started to wipe the blood away whenever the two fighters separated.

Later in the 5 minute session it was a punch that led to the end of the fight as Lesnar landed a thunderous right hand that hit Couture right behind his ear, putting the 45-year old fighter down on the canvas.

Lesnar rushed in with hammer fists similar to his fight with Frank Mir, except Couture was obviously stunned, and his much larger opponent kept coming with punches and forearms until the fight was stopped.

Couture remained on the mat for a few moments when the fight ended, signaling that he was definitely out when the fight was stopped.

Immediately at the conclusion of the fight, Lesnar jumped to the top of the cage in celebration, while soaking in the moment of winning the UFC heavyweight championship by beating an icon in Randy Couture.

"I can't believe it," said Lesnar in victory. "I can't believe it."

With only 4 fights to his credit, Lesnar now reigns as the UFC heavyweight champion and he credits his preparation and smarts for helping him get to this pinnacle in the sport so early on in his career.

"I just believe in hard work and that it pays off," Lesnar stated. "I may come across as a cocky SOB, but I'm just confident. That's what the lord gave me, he gave me my body and he gave me my mind."

Couture was obviously disappointed with the loss, but he stayed positive for the future, unsure what he would do next, but still confident in his ability to compete.

"We'll let things settle out and figure out what we really want to do," Couture commented after the loss. "I still feel like I'm getting better as a fighter, and we'll see what happens."

As for Lesnar, the new champion will wait for the Dec 27 showdown between Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Frank Mir to face the winner to finally settle who the undisputed heavyweight champion in the UFC truly is.
